Scribble Cookies - from Scribble Art

Saving old crayons has finally found a use that has amazing art properties for all ages! You may find yourself breaking and peeling brand new crayons just because it's so much fun to create these melted crayon disks for coloring, drawing, and rubbings.

Materials:

old crayon stubs, peeled and broken
old muffin tin
warm oven
oven mitt
freezer

Process:

1. Save stub ends of old crayons.
2. Peel and break the crayons into pieces.
3. Sort colors into an old muffin tin, one color per cup. Or mix colors in each cup to make rainbow swirled scribble cookies.
4. Place the muffin tin in the warm oven which has been turned off.
5. Keep an eye on the melting crayons, and remove them from the oven when they just turn squishy but not totally liquid. Use an oven mitt and adult help.
6. Next, for quickest and easiest removal of scribble cookies, place the muffin tin in the freezer for about a half hour.
7. Remove from the freezer, and POP! out.

Hints:

• Kids love metallic colors such as gold, silver, and copper. These colors are available in bulk at school supply stores.
• Assign this muffin tin to crayon melting from now on and avoid cleaning the wax from its surface. Muffin tins come in handy for many crayon melting art ideas. However, the muffin tin will wash in very hot soapy water if you must return it to baking use.

Variations:

• Color with scribble cookies as you would any crayon.

• Use scribble cookies for:

  • encaustic painting, p.49
  • rubbings, p.43
  • scribbling laminations, p.46
  • embossing etching, p.42
  • arm dancing, p.40
  • crayon resist, p.44
