Drippy Daubers - from Big Messy Art
SQUEEZE A SPONGE INTO the toe of a child's old sock and tie it closed. Then daub the sock in paint, just like a huge Bingo marker! Make one for every color of the rainbow.
Materials:
kitchen sponges
child's old socks
pieces of heavy yarn or string
tempera paint
pans for paint
scissors
cardboard or paper
newspaper
tape
|
Process:
1. Stuff a kitchen sponge into the toe of a child's old sock. If possible, make seven socks with seven sponges for the seven colors of the rainbow.
2. Tie the sock closed with heavy yarn or string. Tie the sock very tight.
3. Set each sock in a pan of paint.
4. Paint on a piece of cardboard placed upright or paint on paper. Place newspaper under to catch drips.
5. Press the paint-filled socks on the paper, daubing and dripping the paint down.
6. Re-dip in other colors, to mix colors right on the dauber. Or only put daubers back into their own colors so no mixing occurs on the dauber.
7. Try writing or drawing with the daubers too. Making polka-dots is easy!
8. When completely finished with the activity, daubers can be soaked in water, and then squeezed and cleaned under the faucet. Some artists really enjoy watching the colors mix and wash down the drain of a white sink.
Variations:
Be a two-fisted dauber, one in each hand.
Make a bouquet of daubers, and make daubing prints with four or more colors at a time.
