Hands Across America Paper Dolls from Global Art
Young artists fold and cut paper into paper dolls that represent the peoples and cultures of North America.
Did You Know?
North America represents the "melting pot of the world," a place where people from all over the world can live together, joining in work and play and sometimes building new families whose cultures come together as one.
Materials:
thin paper (newspaper, newsprint or thin butcher paper work well)
pencils
scissors
colored markers
crayons (multicultural colors)
all map of North America, optional

Process:
1. Fold the paper into an accordion fold, starting with the short edge of the paper and folding it 2" (5cm) over towards the center of the paper. Flip the paper over and fold this side again, always folding toward the center. Continue this procedure until all of the paper has been folded, back and forth, back and forth, If the end of the paper does not have enough space for a 2" (5cm) fold, simply cut it off.
2. Hold all of the folds together and place on the work surface.
3. Draw half of a person on the paper area. Important: Draw the arms and legs so they touch the fold. If this is not done, the drawing will fall apart. Practicing first on some folded scrap paper or newspaper may help with the actual project.
4. Hold the folds together and cut through all sections of the paper, leaving drawn areas of the folds intact where the feet and hands touch.
5. Open the folds and see the outlines of people. (If they are not attached, study the area where a mistake was made and repeat the process.)
6. Color the features and clothing on the people, choosing to make each person different in clothing and skin color.
7. Make more paper dolls and attach the new set to the old set for a long chain of people. Add as many as desired. As an optional idea, display the dolls stretching across a wall map of North America, from one end to the other.
