Sit Down Paint from First Art

Put on some bright and lively music! Children can make giggly paint-dance prints on large paper using their bare feet, rain boots, or old shoes when they sit on chairs, dip their feet into paint, and then, without standing, dance their feet on the paper beneath the chairs.

Materials:

butcher or craft paper, around 2' x 3' (1/2 m x 1 m), or any convenient size
tape
child-height chairs
dishpan or tub
paint
dishpan or tub of soapy water
old towels
bare feet, rain boots, or old shoes

Prepare (Adult)

• Tape a sheet of paper beneath a child-height chair.
• Pour about 1 cup (240 ml) paint into a dishpan or tub and place it next to the chair.
• Place old towels and a tub of soapy water next to the chair.

Process (Child)

• Ask the child to sit on the chair and place the tub of paint on the paper so the child can dip her feet into the paint. Then remove the tub.
• Turn on some lively music.
• While seated, press and dance feet on the paper until the paint no longer makes prints. If desired, “re-dip” feet or add new paper.
• When the child is finished, first wipe her feet with an old, dry towel. Then help her put her feet in the soapy tub of water, and then wipe her feet dry. (Additional cleaning may be needed.)

Tips

• Newspaper printers often sell roll ends of unprinted newspaper for a low price. The roll is usually 12' (4 m) wide, and they will saw it in half to make two 6' (2 m) rolls. The rolls of newsprint are great for big projects or footprint art.
• Some children do not want to get their feet or hands messy. Provide optional choices for them, such as covering their feet with old socks or boots.

Variations

Walking on a long sheet of paper and making footprints is great fun. Either paint the bottoms of children’s feet with a paintbrush (oh, that tickles!), or children can dip their feet into tubs of paint, and then walk with adult assistance down along sheet of paper. Place a tub of soapy water and old towels at the end of the paper for easy cleanup. (Walking backwards is fun, too!)
