Sock Puppets - from Making Make-Believe
Sew buttons, beads, and yarn or felt scraps on an old sock to create a puppet character. A "must-do" project for all creative puppeteers!
Materials:
old sock
materials for decorating, such as:
- beads buttons felt scraps fringes googly craft eyes masking tape old jewelry pompoms rickrack rug scraps stick-on dots yarn
needle and thread or fabric glue
Process:
1. Pull the sock over the non-drawing hand, positioning the heel of the sock over the thumb. See how the puppet 'talks" as the thumb and other fingers are pulled together and apart.
2. Decide how to decorate the puppet making good use of the mouth of the sock puppet in the design. 3. Begin sewing or gluing on scraps and other materials to give the puppet eyes, nose, hair, and personality.
4. When done, help the puppet talk by opening and closing the puppet's mouth with a hand inside the sock.
More Ideas:
Stuff the toe of a sock with a ball of cotton stuffing or tissue paper. Tie a piece of string around the neck (not too tight). The rest of the sock is the puppet's body. Glue or sew on decorations as desired. Insert fingers in the head of the puppet.
As with all puppets, make up an original story, or act out a favorite book or fairy tale. Puppets can sing along with a favorite recording.
