Spoke Weaving - from Science Arts
Materials:
tricycle
paper
ribbon, crepe paper, yarn
outdoor play area
Art Experiment:
1. Turn the tricycle on its side so the big wheel turns freely.
2. Create designs in the wheel weaving and tying the yarn, crepe paper, and ribbons in the spokes.
3. Spin the wheel to see the design. Be careful to keep fingers, loose hair and clothes away from the spinning wheel.
4. Decorate the two small wheels too. Spin all three wheels.
Variations:
- Decorate trikes and bikes and have a parade!
- Tie two colors of crepe paper, such as yellow and blue, in the spokes. Spin the wheel to see if the colors blend into a new color such as green.
- Decorate the spokes with an environmental theme such as twigs, leaves, flowers, and litter.

The decorated wheel on the tricycle spins very rapidly. The human eye can't keep up with the speeding IMAGES so the brain blends the colors and shapes together into a blur of moving, mixing colors and shapes. As the spinning wheel slows down, the eye can begin to see separate decorations and individual colors.
